Veld is the fine-dining restaurant at Spier Hotel in Stellenbosch, and it takes seasonal eating seriously. Dinner is built almost entirely around what the estate's gardens and pastures, and the local farmers nearby, are producing right now.
Expect South African flavours and a kitchen that cares about regenerative farming. Dishes are generous and nourishing, made to show off the ingredients rather than hide them. The menu changes with the seasons instead of staying put all year, so it's a restaurant you can come back to.
If you'd like wine with your meal, the pairings come from the Wine Library next door, which keeps the whole evening connected to Spier's own cellar.
Veld serves dinner only, from 18:00 to 21:30, and advance bookings are essential.
Getting there from Green Gables
Spier is on the R310 (Baden Powell Drive) just outside Stellenbosch, around 30 km from Strand. Allow 30 to 40 minutes by car, and a little longer at peak times.
About Spier
Spier is one of the oldest wine farms in the country. Wine has been made here since 1692, and its cellar is the oldest dated cellar still in use in South Africa.
Today it's a working, regeneratively farmed estate of around 650 hectares, much of it restored renosterveld and fynbos, along the Eerste River. The farm runs food gardens and a nursery, supports local artists, and has spent more than 30 years on ecological restoration. That's the thinking behind Veld's menu: food that comes from healthy soil, grown close by.
The wines
Spier makes nine wine collections, from easy-drinking everyday wines and canned wines to certified organic ranges. The single-varietal 21 Gables range and the flagship Frans K. Smit blends are the ones to look for if you want to taste the estate at its best.
In 2026, four Spier Chenin Blancs were recognised at the Global Chenin Masters, and six of its wines scored 90 points or more in Tim Atkin's South Africa report, so the cellar is in good form.
Planning your evening
Veld is a dinner restaurant, so you'll be driving back after dark. If you're having the wine pairing, arrange a designated driver or book a ride-hailing car for the trip home.
Spier has plenty to see in daylight, so it's worth arriving early. The farm is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00, with tastings from 09:30. You can walk or cycle the farm trails, look at the art installations, browse the Cowshed Shop, or stop at Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery. Eagle Encounters, a bird of prey centre, is also on the estate.
Make a day of it
Spend the afternoon in Stellenbosch's old town, a few minutes up the road, then drive out to Spier for dinner. Or start further south with the midday duck parade at Vergenoegd Löw, which is also off the R310.
