Is Strand Safe? A Local's Guide

Strand, Western Cape

Strand Beach near Green Gables on a calm, sunny day

It's one of the questions we're asked most often, so here's our honest answer as people who live and host guests in Strand. For most visitors, Strand is a relaxed, family-friendly seaside town, and the vast majority of stays go smoothly. Like anywhere in South Africa, though, a few sensible precautions make a real difference.

Is Strand safe for tourists?

During the day, the beachfront, Beach Road and the promenade are busy with families, walkers and joggers, and most visitors feel comfortable there. Strand is a residential town, not a resort, so you'll see everyday life alongside the holiday flats and restaurants.

As in most South African towns, petty crime such as theft from cars and bag-snatching is the main thing to guard against. Violent crime against visitors is uncommon, but it pays to be aware of your surroundings.

Is Strand safe at night?

The restaurants on Beach Road are lively in the evening, especially in summer. After dinner, stick to well-lit, busy streets, and avoid walking on the beach itself after dark. If you're going any distance late at night, an e-hailing ride is cheap and easy.

Is Strand safe for swimming?

Strand's beach is long and gently sloping, with relatively calm water for this coast. Swim at lifeguarded beaches, between the flags, and take extra care on windy days, when rip currents are more likely. The tidal pool on Beach Road is the safest place for children and weaker swimmers. See our beaches and tidal pools guide for more.

Practical tips

Don't leave anything visible in a parked car, even for a few minutes, and use parking areas with car guards where possible. Keep phones and cameras out of sight when you're not using them, and take only what you need to the beach.

Use ATMs inside shopping centres rather than on the street, and be wary of anyone offering to help at an ATM.

On Clarence Drive and at quiet lookouts and trailheads, don't stop alone, and don't leave valuables in the car. Hike in groups rather than on your own.

Emergency numbers

Police: 10111. From a mobile phone, you can also dial 112. Save the number of your accommodation host too. At Green Gables, we're always happy to help with directions, advice or an emergency.

Our view

We wouldn't host guests here if we didn't love the place. Strand has a wide beach, warm water, and a friendly, unpretentious feel. With the same common sense you'd use in any city, most visitors find it an easy, welcoming base for the Helderberg.
