Strand has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Every season has something going for it, and the town is never as crowded as the Atlantic side of Cape Town. Here's what to expect through the year.

Summer (December to February)

Long, hot, dry days, with average highs in the high 20s °C. This is peak beach season and school-holiday time, so Beach Road is lively and the restaurants are busy. The south-easter, the Cape's summer wind, often blows in the afternoons, so swim and walk in the mornings. Lifeguards are on duty at the main beaches, and the Crystal Pools hike is open.

Autumn (March to May)

Our favourite time of year. The wind usually drops, the sea is still warm, the days are settled and the holiday crowds have gone. It's harvest season on the wine estates, and the vineyards turn gold and red. The first winter rain typically arrives in May.

Winter (June to August)

Cooler and wetter, with average highs in the high teens °C, and most of the year's rain. Between the fronts, though, winter brings some of the clearest, stillest days of the year, perfect for a beach walk. Southern right whales arrive in False Bay from about June. It's the quietest and best-value season, and a good time for long lunches by the fire on the wine estates.

Spring (September to November)

The fynbos flowers on the Helderberg and along Clarence Drive, and whale sightings are often at their best. The weather warms up but can be changeable. Strawberry picking starts on Helderberg farms from about October, and the Crystal Pools reopen on 1 November.

So when is the best time to visit Strand?

For beach holidays, February to April gives you warm water and fewer crowds than December and January. For whales, come between July and November. For quiet, value and cosy wine-farm lunches, winter is hard to beat. If you can only choose one month, we'd pick March.

What to pack

In summer: sunscreen, a hat, and a windbreaker for the afternoons. In winter: a warm jacket and a rain layer. Whatever the season, bring layers. The weather in the Cape can change quickly, and evenings by the sea are cooler than you'd expect.
