The Helderberg has some of the warmest, calmest swimming on the Cape coast. False Bay is noticeably warmer than the Atlantic side of the Peninsula, and the beaches from Strand to Gordon's Bay face south-west across the bay, with the mountains behind.
Here's how the main beaches and tidal pools compare, from Green Gables eastwards.
Strand Beach
About three kilometres of soft white sand along Beach Road, 15 minutes on foot from Green Gables. The waves are gentle, and there's a promenade, a kiosk and plenty of restaurants. The City of Cape Town has lifeguards here in season, so swim between their flags. Strand was named a Blue Flag pilot site for the 2026/27 season. Our Strand Beach guide has the full detail.
Strand Tidal Pool
The tidal pool on Beach Road is the City's recommended safe swimming spot in Strand, with a kiosk and the boat-launching site nearby. The walls break the waves, so it's the best place to swim with small children or when the sea is rough.
If the sea is too cold, the Strand Indoor Swimming Pool, also on Beach Road, is a heated public pool. At the time of writing, entry is R40 for adults and R23 for children aged 3 to 15. Children under 2 and pensioners over 60 get in free.
Harmony Park Tidal Pool
Further east, between Strand and Gordon's Bay, the Harmony Park tidal pool is a popular local spot. It gets busy on summer weekends and public holidays.
Gordon's Bay Main Beach
Ten minutes' drive from Green Gables. The City describes it as a long sandy beach with calm, shallow water that's safe for swimming. It's the best choice for families with young children, and the reef offshore is good for snorkelling.
Bikini Beach
Gordon's Bay's Blue Flag beach, tucked next to the harbour below the mountain. Lifeguards are on duty during the Blue Flag season, from December to March. It's sheltered, popular with paddleboarders and kayakers, and gets very busy on summer weekends, so arrive early for parking.
Sparks Bay tidal pool and Kogel Bay
Along Clarence Drive, about 20 to 25 minutes from Green Gables, Sparks Bay has a tidal pool with braai and picnic spots next to it. There's an entrance fee. Kogel Bay, just beyond it, is wild and beautiful, but the rip currents and rocks make it a beach for watching surfers, not swimming. See our Kogel Bay guide.
Is it safe to swim at Strand and Gordon's Bay?
Generally, yes. These are some of the calmer swimming beaches near Cape Town. Swim at lifeguarded beaches, between the flags, and take extra care on windy days, when rip currents are more likely. The tidal pools are the safest option for weaker swimmers and children.
Never swim alone or after drinking, and keep an eye on children in the water at all times.
Best time for the beach
Mornings are usually calmest. In summer, the south-easter often picks up in the afternoon, so swim early and save the afternoon for a walk or a long lunch. The water is at its warmest in late summer.
