The Helderberg Nature Reserve sits on the slopes of the Helderberg above Somerset West, with around ten trails to choose from. They start with a 400 m stroll of about ten minutes and go all the way up to full-day routes. Each one is graded for difficulty and for exposure to heights.

For most visitors, the shorter walks make a lovely morning out. The higher you climb, the more the view opens up, and from West Peak you look out over Somerset West, Strand, the Cape Peninsula and Stellenbosch.

The summit is a different matter. The West Peak and The Dome routes reach the top of the mountain, take seven to eight hours, and are graded for experienced hikers only.

On the longer trails, wear boots and carry water, warm layers, a hat and sunscreen. The reserve advises against hiking alone and asks you to take a phone with the emergency number. Membership cards are issued at the Visitor Centre, so check current fees and hours before you set off.
